The topic we have chosen for our project has been largely neglected: the „Holocaust of the Roma“ - the Porajmos. What does the Porajmos mean today for the Roma people of central Europe (Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary)? How is it perceived and remembered and what part does it play in Roma identity? We will examine these questions in the context of the cultural political infrastructure of the Roma and will also study cultural institutions (museums) and sites of remembrance. We will make contact with the broader Roma population on commemorative days and at Roma festivals. The Roma cultures of remembrance of the Porajmos and the various layers of memory will be analysed and compared, taking geographical factors into consideration.
