Die zunehmende Integration Europas hat bisher nicht zur Entstehung einer europäischen Erinnerung geführt. Zeitgleich zu ersten Versuchen wie dem Musée de l’Europe dennoch einen entsprechenden Kanon von Erzählungen zu etablieren, beobachten wir eine Renaissance nationalstaatlicher Deutungsversuche, die zunehmend von Regierungen ideologisch instrumentalisiert werden, um der Bevölkerung eine bestimmte Version der Vergangenheit zu vermitteln. Diese Strategien treffen immer wieder auf den Widerstand einzelner Gruppen.

Diese Akteure kritisieren einerseits grundsätzlich den Einfluss des Staates bei der Kreation von Erzählungen und setzen sich für ihre eigene Version des Vergangenen ein. Im Rahmen der Geschichtswerkstatt Europa werden diese Aushandlungsprozesse anhand von Diskussionen um Jubiläen, Museen und Denkmäler kritisch verfolgt und die Rolle zivilgesellschaftlicher und wissenschaftlicher Akteure reflektiert.

The increasing integration of Europe has not so far given rise to a unified European remembrance culture. Along with the first attempts to establish a canon of narratives, by for instance the Musée de l’Europe, there has been a resurgence of state-centred interpretations, which are increasingly used as ideological instruments by governments to project to the population a particular version of history. These strategies frequently encounter resistance from individual groups.

These groups criticise the influence of the state in the creation of narratives and advance their own version of history. Geschichtswerkstatt Europa examines this process of negotiation through discussion of commemorative days, museums, memorials and the role of civil society organisations and academics.

Vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gehörte das Zusammenleben unterschiedlicher ethnischer Gruppen in Mittel- und Osteuropa sowohl in den Städten als auch in den Dörfern zur Normalität. Die bereits vor 1939 existierenden Konfliktlinien wurden in vielen Orten durch Genozid, Bürgerkrieg und die unterschiedlichen Besatzungspolitiken noch verschärft. Da viele dieser Linien bis in die Gegenwart führen, spielt der Zweite Weltkrieg in den europäischen Erinnerungskulturen eine zentrale Rolle als Projektionsfläche für Konflikte, aber auch für die Überwindung dieser durch Akte der Versöhnung. Die Geschichtswerkstatt Europa untersucht in exemplarischen Projekten die Repräsentation von Ethnizität an konkreten Orten in ihrer lokalen Komplexität. Dabei werden die mitteleuropäischen Mosaike nicht allein „rekonstruiert“, sondern der Prozess des erneuten Zusammensetzens hinterfragt. Darüber hinaus wird die Konstruktion von Ethnizität auf der individuellen, lebensweltlichen Ebene nachvollzogen. Deshalb wird im Rahmen der Geschichtswerkstatt Europa anhand einzelner Biographien die Bedeutung ethnischer Identitäten für die Erinnerung an das Europa jenseits der Katastrophe sowie den Einfluss dieser auf den Prozess des Erinnerns untersucht.

The coexistance of diverse ethnic groups in the towns and villages of central and eastern Europe was accepted as normal before WWII. The conflict lines which existed prior to 1939 were exacerbated in many places by genocide, civil war and various occupation policies. Since many of these lines extend to the present day, WWII is central to European remembrance cultures as the cause of conflict, as well as the opportunity for reconciliation.

Geschichtswerkstatt Europa investigates the representation of ethnicity at specific sites in its local complexity. This not only ‚reconstructs’ the mosaic of central Europe, but scrutinises the process of re-assembly, thereby tracing the construction of ethnicity on the level of individual, lived experience. Through individual biographies, Geschichtswerkstatt Europa examines the significance of ethnic identities for remembrance of Europe beyond the catastrophe of war and the influence of this on the process of remembrance.

Seit die Bilder der Flüchtlingsströme im ehemaligen Jugoslawien über die Bildschirme flimmerten, rückte die Erinnerung an Flucht und Vertreibung in Deutschland immer stärker ins Blickfeld. Bereits zuvor war aber deutlich geworden, dass Zwangsmigration zu einem Kennzeichen des europäischen Zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts geworden war, das lange vor den Deutschen ganze Völker und Bevölkerungsgruppen betraf und im Zweiten Weltkrieg in seinen Ausmaßen und Brutalität radikalisiert wurde.

Wie an die verlassenen Orte und die Migrationsprozesse erinnert wird, ist heute von neuer Relevanz, da viele europäische Gesellschaften in der Prägung ihres Selbstbildes erst nach und nach auf die Veränderungen durch die nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg erfolgten Migrationsprozesse reagieren. Im Kern geht es darum, wie heute die Geschichten der Zugereisten in die Geschichte der Mehrheit Eingang findet. Diese Frage stellt sich für die Opfer von Vertreibungen ebenso wie für die die Nachfahren von sogenannten Gastarbeitern und anderen Migranten.

Since television screens were filled with images of streams of refugees in the former Yugoslavia, the memory of expulsion and flight has receded further into the background in Germany. Forced migration was clearly one of the most definitive experiences of the European 20th century, affecting entire peoples and population groups and reaching ist most brutal and extreme in WWII.

There is new relevance to the way in which the abandoned places and  migrations are remembered because many European societies are only gradually re-examining their self-image and reflecting on the changes brought about by the post-WWII migrations. Essentially this is a question of how the history of the incomers is admitted into the history of the majority. This question applies to the victims of forced displacement, as well as to the descendents of so-called ‚guest workers’ and other migrants.

Geschichte hat immer eine zeitliche und eine räumliche Dimension. Während die Chronologie zu einer Grundstruktur von erzählter Geschichte geworden ist, geriet die Analyse von räumlichen Strukturen über lange Zeit ins Hintertreffen. Inspiriert von den Ideen Karl Schlögels bietet die Geschichtswerkstatt Europa einen Rahmen, um Europa als Raum neu zu vermessen und ihn gedanklich neu zusammenzufügen. Dafür sind die Exkursion und die Besichtigung der Orte selbst zu einem prägenden Element vieler Projekte geworden.

Ein wichtiges Konzept, in dem Erinnerung als Identität stiftender Prozess mit einer räumlichen Dimension verknüpft wurde, ist in den lieux de mémoire bzw. Erinnerungsorten auszumachen, die nach Pierre Nora von Hagen Schulze, Etienne François und anderen weiter entwickelt wurden. In den Projekten der Geschichtswerkstatt Europa werden europäische Kulturlandschaften nach jenen Kristallisationspunkten untersucht, die generationenübergreifend eine starkes Potenzial zur Schaffung kollektiver Identität aufweisen.

History always has both a temporal and a spatial dimension. As chronology has become the fundamental structure of narrated history, the analysis of spatial structures has long been neglected. Inspired by the ideas of Karl Schlögel, Geschichtswerkstatt Europa provides the opportunity to reconsider Europe as a space and to reconstruct it intellectually. Excursions and site visits are therefore a vital element of many projects.

The terms lieux de mémoire or sites of memory/remembrace (Erinnerungsorten) developed by Hagen Schulze, Etienne François and others after Pierre Nora, conceptualise memory/remembrance as an identity-forming process with a spatial dimension. The projects of Geschichtswerkstatt Europa look for these ‚points of crystallisation’ in European cultural landscapes which offer the greatest potential for collective identity creation across the generations.

Als Quelle historischen Wissens erst nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg etabliert, wird heute bereits das Ende der Zeitzeugen debattiert: zentrales Motiv der Diskussion ist dabei der angenommene Verlust eines spezifisch wertvollen Zugangs zur Vergangenheit. Mündlich erfragte Geschichte spielt in den Projekten der Geschichtswerkstatt Europa eine herausgehobene Rolle, erlaubt sie doch eine intensive und unmittelbare Auseinandersetzung junger Europäer mit den Gewalterfahrungen im 20. Jahrhundert und der Erinnerung an diese.

Dies ist nicht möglich, ohne Oral History als Methode, aber auch mit Blick auf die durch sie gewonnenen Erkenntnisse, kritisch anzuwenden: Eine Auseinandersetzung mit der Erinnerung an die Gewalterfahrungen im 20. Jahrhundert muss individuelle wie kollektive, staatlich initiierte wie gesellschaftlich gepflegte Gedächtnisse gleichermaßen berücksichtigen und zu einander in Beziehung setzen.

Established as a source of historical knowledge only after the Second World War, today the decline of contemporary witnesses is debated. Central to the debate is the presumed loss of a particularly valuable link to history. Oral history is key to the projects of Geschichtswerkstatt Europa, allowing the young Europeans a more intensive and direct engagement with the conflicts of the 20th century and remembrance of them.

This would not be possible without the method of oral history or the ability to critically apply the knowledge gathered in this way. Any discussion of remembrance of the conflicts of the 20th century must take into account both individual and collective memories, those cultivated by the state and society and consider them alongside one another.

Während im Rahmen der Geschichtswerkstatt Europa Denkmäler, Museen und andere Räume als kulturelle Texte gelesen und dechiffriert werden, erschließen sich weitere Dimensionen ihrer Bedeutung oft erst im Gespräch mit den Akteuren vor Ort. Besonders der Umgang mit zu Stein gewordenen Erinnerungskulturen lässt sich durch Feldforschung gewinnbringend erschließen.

Grundlegend ist dabei die Annahme, dass die Teilnehmer der Geschichtswerkstatt Europa im Rahmen ihrer Projekte zu teilnehmenden Beobachtern werden, die an Jahrestagen, bei der Organisation von Veranstaltungen und der Vermittlung von Wissen selbst zu Akteuren werden, indem sie die Beteiligten nach deren Bedeutung fragen. Damit gewinnen die Methoden der Anthropologie für die Geschichtswerkstatt Europa zunehmend an Bedeutung. Dazu gehört, die eigene Rolle im Feld zu hinterfragen und das Handwerkszeug der dichten Beschreibung anzuwenden.

While Geschichtswerkstatt Europa considers and scrutinises memorials, museums and other spaces as cultural texts, other aspects of their significance often only arise through discussion with involved parties at the site. Field studies offer a particularly revealing way of exploring the relationship with the remembrance culture in stone.

Fundamental to this is the expectation that the participants of Geschichtswerkstatt Europa become active observers who participate in commemorative days, organising events and communicating knowledge, while asking what significance these events have for those involved. Methods from anthropology are thus becoming more important for Geschichtswerkstatt Europa, such as scrutinising your own role in the field and applying the tools of close description.

Ein zentrales Kennzeichen der Geschichtswerkstatt Europa ist, dass in den Projekten Träger unterschiedlicher Kulturen gemeinsam ein inhaltliches Thema behandeln. Dadurch findet das Projekt von Anfang an in Form eines Dialogs bzw. Trialogs statt, der auch die Grenzen gemeinsamer Diskussionen aufzeigt. Erst im Zuge der Projektarbeit werden inhaltliche Differenzen deutlich, aber auch die kulturelle Prägung, die bedingt, wie und warum die Teilnehmer eigentlich ihr Projekt durchführen.

Oft löst in den interdisziplinären Projekten gerade die Einsicht in unterschiedliche kulturelle und wissenschaftliche Sozialisationen Krisen aus. Diese werden in der Geschichtswerkstatt Europa nicht vermieden, sondern als Kernbestandteil der Projektarbeit thematisiert. Die Chance einer Bewältigung dieser Krisen besteht darin, die Bedeutung von eigenen nationalen Prägungen gegenseitig zu hinterfragen und diese zu relativieren, indem durch die Konfrontation der eigenen Wissenskultur mit anderen Grundannahmen scheinbare Gewissheiten ins Wanken geraten.

It is fundamental to Geschichtswerkstatt Europa that the projects bring together participants from different cultures to work on one theme. From the outset the projects therefore involve dialogue, which reveals the limitations of collective discussions. It is only in the course of the project work that differences become apparent, as well as cultural conditioning, dependent on how and why the participants carry out their project.

Interdisciplinary projects often trigger different cultural and academic crises of socialisation. These are not ignored by Geschichtswerkstatt Europa, but are instead thematised as an important part of the project work. These crises can be overcome by questioning and qualifying the significance of ones own cultural conditioning, while challenging the certainties of ones own knowledge by confronting it with other fundamental assumptions.

I come from Warsaw, Poland. Everything started in my high-school. It was a place open for people of different nationalities, religious or political views. I learned there a lot about the diversity of our world. My main interested have always been people. One day I read an advertisement of journalist workshop organised by the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights in Warsaw. I became a member of the Young Jounalists‘ Association „Polis“ and journalism became the love of my life. During last years I took part in the project dealing with the history of Polish aristocratic families in France, created newspapers for conferences and festivals (eg. Model United Nations meeting in Oxford), organised a journalist contest about the situation of surrogate families in Poland and coordinated a publication of the book. Since 2008 I have been a co-writter of the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza. My next challenge is the project „Paths of Remembrance“ that will take place in Bosnia. I‘m currently living in Paris, speak English and French. [description_en] => I’m a 22 years-old student of Sociology and young journalist. I come from Warsaw, Poland. Everything started in my high-school. It was a place open for people of different nationalities, religious or political views. I learned there a lot about the diversity of our world. My main interested have always been people. One day I read an advertisement of journalist workshop organised by the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights in Warsaw. I became a member of the Young Jounalists‘ Association „Polis“ and journalism became the love of my life. During last years I took part in the project dealing with the history of Polish aristocratic families in France, created newspapers for conferences and festivals (eg. Model United Nations meeting in Oxford), organised a journalist contest about the situation of surrogate families in Poland and coordinated a publication of the book. Since 2008 I have been a co-writter of the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza. My next challenge is the project „Paths of Remembrance“ that will take place in Bosnia. Diktatur, Krieg, Zwangsarbeit und Völkermord prägten das Europa des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sie führten zu millionenfachem Tod, aber auch zu massenhafter Zwangsmigration, die in die Erinnerungskulturen europäischer Gesellschaften als Deportation, Flucht, Evakuierung, Umsiedlung, Auswanderung, Repatriierung, Vertreibung u. a. eingegangen sind. Für Überlebende und Nachgeborene bleibt die Herausforderung, dass ihre Erinnerungen an diese Gewalterfahrungen auf Orte Bezug nehmen, die oft weitab vom ihrem heutigen Lebensmittelpunkt liegen. Die geographische Entfernung wird durch eine kulturelle Distanz verstärkt, die daraus resultiert, dass dort heute zumeist andere Menschen leben, deren Erinnerung zu ebenso entfernten Orten führt.

Spätestens seit dem Fall des Eisernen Vorhangs kann man an diese Orte wieder zurückkehren, sie besuchen und sie erforschen. Die Verbindung zwischen Gegenwart und Vergangenheit, aber auch zwischen den Orten wird seither in Form von Reisen, Erzählungen, Symbolen und Ritualen hergestellt. Durch die so geprägten Pfade der Erinnerung werden Wege der Zwangsmigration vergegenwärtigt und die aus ihnen resultierende Distanz verringert.

Die Stiftung EVZ förderte im Rahmen der Geschichtswerkstatt Europa im Programmjahr 2010 internationale Teams, die gemeinsam einen oder mehrere Pfade der Erinnerung analysierten, die heute eine besondere Relevanz aufweisen. Das bedeutete, dass ihr Projekt ein Verständigungs-, Annäherungs-, bzw. ein Konfliktpotenzial für die jeweiligen Gesellschaften hatte.

Twentieth-century Europe has been marked by dictatorship, war, forced labour and genocide. This has resulted in not only millions of deaths but also enforced migration, which has become stored in the collective memory as deportation, flight, evacuation, displacement, emigration, repatriation, dispossession, etc.. The challenge facing survivors and their descendants is that memories of these acts of violence are often connected with places very far removed from their current lives. The geographical distance is intensified by the cultural distance which is created as those places are inhabited nowadays by different people whose memories relate to other, equally distant places.

With the fall of the Iron Curtain it has become increasingly possible to return to these places, to visit and study them. The connection between the past and the present, indeed, between one place and another, has been established since then by way of journeys, narration, symbols and rituals. The Paths of Remembrance thus taken help to recollect routes of forced migration and to reduce the distance that eventuated from it.

In the programme year 2010, within the framework of Geschichtswerkstatt Europa, the Foundation EVZ funded international teams as they collaborated on analysis of one or more Paths of Remembrance of particular relevance today. This means that the subject of project work needed to have the potential to create understanding, reconciliation and/or conflict for the societies concerned.
