Individual memories and collective remembrance of occupation and war in the region of Voronezh

A working group of German, Ukrainian and Russian students will investigate the history of occupation during the Second World War in the region of Voronezh. A „memory lab“ in Voronezh will bring a working group together to compile and contextualise the history of various individuals and groups, both perpetrators and victims of the occupation. The aim is not only to reconstruct the complex realities of occupation, but to locate the various concepts of memory and historical ideals between collective remembrance and individual memories. Using both biographical (oral history interviews) and cultural history approaches, the various historical ideals and narratives as well as individual and collective memories will be identified and brought together. This will create a multi-faceted image of both the history of the region and the memories of occupation. The central question posed by the work is: how was the experience of the Second World War and German occupation of the region of Voronezh 1940-43 remembered and passed down by various individuals and groups (Russians, Ukrainians, Germans, Jews)?
