The Pharrajimos Monument in Nagykanizsa

There are two monuments that have been completed in Hungary since the nineties where official national remembrance events take place yearly with participation of leading political representatives as well as Roma and non-Roma intellectuals. The speeches on these events emphasize the forgotten character of the Pharrajimos, the lack of a widely accepted and known narrative on the one hand and on the other hand the current discrimination against the Roma Population in today's world.

One of these two monuments was completed in 1991 in Nagykanizsa and commemorates the deported Roma. The statue was built in cooperation between the local municipality and the Amalipe Cigány Hagyományorző Egyesület (Amalipe Association for Roma Traditions). The wooden statute represents a woman stretching her hands towards a symbol of the death to remind all visitors of the thousands of Roma who died during the Second World War.
